Automated future at Sines

PSA Sines in Portugal has introduced six new fully automated rubber-tired gantry cranes (aRTGs), as part of its transition towards fully automated yard equipment. Added to the existing twenty-nine, the new units will be used to enhance productivity, safety, and sustainability at the terminal.

As part of the phase III expansion, they are set to become operational by the end of Q2/2024, after testing and commissioning. The move from diesel to electric aligns with PSA Sines' sustainability goals, which aim to halve carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The terminal's phase III expansion project, totaling EUR 412 million, includes the recent addition of two ship-to-shore quay cranes and the acquisition of twelve new prime movers. Upon completion in 2030, the terminal's handling capacity is expected to nearly double to 4.2 million teu annually. (pb)
