Austrian Post tests autonomous courtyard logistics

Austrian Post is promoting autonomous driving and intelligent solutions in in-house logistics. The mail service provider and the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) have already taken the next step - namely an innovative vehicle for the autonomous transport of containers – also known as swap bodies – at Austrian Post's logistics centre in Inzersdorf, Vienna.

The transfer vehicle, which has been specially developed for use at logistics locations, is intended to ensure the autonomous transport of swap bodies on company premises.

The swap bodies are transported independently from the designated parking spaces to the gates and docking to them is also automated.

Peter Umundum, member of Austrian Post's management board, said: "At our locations, some 3,300 swap bodies per day are moved around 800 km. Against the background of increasing parcel volumes the relocation of swap bodies in logistics centres continues to gain in importance." (mw)
