Austrian law also impacts international traffic
The new transport clause of Austria’s Waste Management Act came into effect on 1 January 2023. Waste transports with a total weight of more than 10 t must be transported by rail if they are travelling over a distance of more than 300 km.
The new procedure is working very well not only within Austria but also in international traffic, the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) said.
This year, the carrier is transporting 5,000 t of municipal waste from Italy to the Netherlands for the Italian company Dife. All the waste is being shipped through Austria in one go. In an end-to-end solution, innovative Mobiler containers are transferred horizontally from truck to rail wagon by means of a hydraulic lifting system. (ben)
