Australia to upgrade inland freight route

The Australian government has locked in a further AUD 400 million (EUR 273 million) to upgrade an inland freight route. Billed as the ‘second Bruce highway’, the 1,184 km north–south route from Charters Towers, in North Queensland, to Mungindi, on the New South Wales border, is a nationally significant freight route.

Queensland is a resources and agricultural powerhouse. Improving the inland freight route will unlock more cotton, grain, cattle, fresh produce, coal, oil, gas and other valuable commodities for exporting. The investment will deliver the upgrades needed to move trucks off the Bruce highway and support the flow of goods from regional businesses to supermarkets and ports, the government said.
