Approval for sea cargo terminal near Chicago
Ports of Indiana has received US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) approval to establish the first international sea cargo container terminal on Lake Michigan at Burns Harbor, creating the only all-water container route for ocean vessels to serve the Chicago metropolitan area via the Great Lakes.
The terminal, part of the USA’s 25th largest port, aims to diversify supply chains and reduce the carbon footprint for Midwest shipping. The project includes constructing a CBP container cargo examination facility, expected to be operational by 2026.
Ports of Indiana is pursuing partnerships and planning for the terminal's development to enhance Indiana's port system and support the Indiana container initiative. (pb)
