Another round of mega carriers
The Taiwan-based carrier Evergreen Marine has changed its strategy. Instead of a broad chartering plan, the shipping line now ordered 23,000-teu ships from three separate shipyards at a cost of between USD 1.4 billion and USD 1.6 billion.
Thus, the plan to charter up to 11 mega box ships has been skipped. The order has been split the following way: six vessels from South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries, and two units each from China's Jiangnan Shipyard and Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding.
These newbuilds will be the largest vessels in the carrier's fleet at this stage. Currently, the company plans to deploy them on Atlantic and Pacific routes. (fd)
