Another milestone for ammonia in shipping
The international classification society Korean Register (KR), located in Busan, gave its approval in Principle (AIP) for the design of a new ammonia-fuel ready vessel on 5 September 2022. The very large gas carrier (VLGC) will be capable of using ammonia as a fuel as well as carrying it as bulk cargo.
The classification society also recently approved designs for a 60,000 cbm ammonia-fuelled ammonia carrier and a 38,000 cbm ammonia carrier/bunkering vessel. According to the 2050 carbon roadmap report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), ammonia is expected to account for 45% of ship fuel demand in 2050. KR currently classes an international fleet of 3,069 vessels totalling 79 million GT. (sh)
