Another generation of MOL vessels
The Tokyo-based Japanese carrier MOL is ordering two new bulk carriers from Oshima Shipbuilding. The so-called 'EeneX' series was designed in pursuit of the best possible coal carrier for electric power companies in Japan. The two vessels MOL has ordered will operate under contracts with Electric Power Development (J-Power) and the Hokuriku Electric Power Company.
The vessels will be employed to supply coal from overseas to power plants in Japan. With an overall length of around 235 m, a breadth of about 38 m, a draught of roughly 20.05 m and a deadweight of about 89,900 t, MOL anticipates ongoing orders for these vessels and expects them to play a leading role in the group’s coal carrier business.
The 'EeneX' design was made public in June 2019. Its main features are a double-hull structure and the semi-box shape of the hold, which further improves discharging operations, speeds up cargo handling and eliminates the ballast hold, so that the vessels carry cargo hold only. (fd)
