An interesting year for the port of Montreal
In December 2019, the Canada Infrastructure Bank announced that it would invest CAD 300 million in financing the port of Montreal’s project to build a new container terminal in Contrecoeur. This optimism seems to be well justified.
In 2019, the port of Montreal handled 40.5 million t of cargo, a rise of 3.7% in comparison to the year before. Container volumes were particularly buoyant, going up by 4.4% to 1.75 million teu. Exports from the USA to Europe represent an important portion of the port's activities.
In accordance with the worldwide trend, cargo from Asia today stands for 26% of Montreal’s container volume, followed by the Middle East (7%) and Latin America (5%).
Europe remains the Canadian port of Montreal’s most important maritime trading partner, although its stake has declined - despite the CETA free trade agreement that was concluded between Canada and the European Union in 2018. (mw)
