An anniversary for air transport
100 years ago today, on 10 November 1922, the first "Grand Prix of Transport Aviation" was held at Le Bourget airport in Paris. The competition, which was organised by the French undersecretary of state for aviation and the Aéro-Club de France, lasted three days.
Five aircraft took part: the four biplanes Bréguet-Léviathan (Fig.), Caudron C.74, Farman 70 and Potez as well as a Vickers-Vimy.
The programme included a versatility test that took into account take-off and landing as well as safety aspects. The candidates also had to show how they could fly with one of the engines not working, take off with a shortened runway or land at a specific location. (ah)
