Ammonia-fuelled engines by WinGD
Swiss marine power company WinGD is set to supply ammonia-fuelled X-DF-A engines for two 46,000 cbm LPG/ammonia carriers to be constructed for ‘Exmar LPG BV’, a joint venture between Exmar and Seapeak, at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
The two 52-bore X52DF-A engines will be delivered in Q2/2025, marking WinGD's entry into the emerging market for ammonia-fuelled gas carriers. These vessels traditionally lead in adopting new power technology that uses their cargoes as fuel.
As global demand for carbon-free fuel and hydrogen carriers accelerates, the ammonia transport market is expected to grow significantly. WinGD's X52DF-A range features high-pressure ammonia injection supplemented by a low pilot fuel dose, ensuring performance and fuel efficiency similar to its diesel-fuelled counterparts.
Exmar LPG's deputy director shipping, Carl-Antoine Saverys, expressed confidence in using ammonia as a safe, zero-carbon shipping fuel, thus confirming his company's commitment to sustainability. (pb)
