Airport on Shetland's main island to close

Scatsta airport (SCS), the historic airfield on Mainland, the main island of Shetland, will shut down at the end of June.

The airport was originally developed by the Royal Air Force 80 years ago. It was awakened in 1978 from the deep slumber into which it had fallen at the end of World War II to provide logistical support for the oil and gas industry in the North Sea, particularly for the Sullom Voe oil terminal.

Now the current principal users, Babcock and Loganair, have decided to switch all their flights to Sumburgh airport (LSI) on the southern tip of the island. Shetland Islands Council has upgraded this airport over the last few years. Like ten other airports in the Highlands and Islands, it is operated by a company that belongs to the Scottish government.
