Air cargo security tolerates no mistakes
The German Federal Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt, LBA) may ban inspectors from continuing to work if they have committed just one serious breach of due diligence in inspecting freight consignments, according to a recent ruling of the administrative court of Braunschweig.
The court had rejected the urgent appeal of an inspector who had worked for a "regulated agent" in Düsseldorf until she classified a cargo consignment as safe in February without having inspected it herself beforehand.
Because of her misconduct, there was a concrete danger that prohibited objects would get on board an aircraft, causing serious damage, in particular to the life and limb of passengers, crew and airport staff, the court explained. Immediate intervention had therefore been necessary. (ah)
