Air cargo rates: a new moon rises

Ahead of the Lunar New Year on 10 February, World ACD has reported a strong increase of rates for air cargo shipments from China to North America (+14%) and to Europe (+8%), although rates are still well below their level in early December.

The analysis reveals that, in terms of tonnage, data still indicate strong demand levels from China to Europe and North America, and also ex-Gulf to Europe, whereas in the same period in 2023 traffic was slowing down.

Expanding the comparison period to two weeks, total global combined tonnages for weeks four and five this year (22 January to 4 February) were up by +9%, compared with the preceding two weeks.

On this basis, outbound tonnages rose from all of the main global air cargo origin regions, including double-digit percentage increases from Central & South America (+33%) and North America (+10%). (ah)
