Aercaribe revives Ecuadorian airport
Hard times came to an end for Latacunga Airport (LTX) when a first charter flight, operated by the Colombian airline Aercaribe Cargo, landed there last week. The facility, which has the second longest runway in Ecuador, had had no commercial flight operations since 2017.
Aercaribe, which wants to provide a 20 t capacity per week with B737-400 freighters on the LTX – Bogota route, hopes to obtain official approval for a scheduled service.
The airport managers, for their part, hope to awaken other airlines’ interest in the region’s main exports. The focus is on fruits, vegetables and cut flowers in particular. The province of Cotopaxi, for example, has set aside over 400 ha for growing roses. (ah)
