Advancing hydrogen collaboration

The port of Gothenburg has partnered with Hitachi Energy and Skanska to implement a hydrogen collaboration project in a significant step towards sustainable infrastructure development.

The project features the use of a hydrogen generator with new technology, piloting emission-free excavation work in one of the port's largest infrastructure projects, Arendal 2. A scalable and portable solution, this generator has been supplying green hydrogen-generated electricity to power an electric excavator manufactured by Volvo.

Lying on a foundation of blasted stone and contaminated dredged material, the Arendal 2 terminal area is the largest terminal development in the port since the 1970s.

The port aims to reduce CO2e (CO2 equivalent) emissions by 70% and sees hydrogen as an ideal solution for its diverse and energy-intensive operations, with potential applications in trucks, trains, terminal equipment, ship propulsion, and shore power support. (pb)
