A whale at MUC

Munich Airport welcomed a very rare guest recently: An Airbus transport aircraft "Beluga ST" picked up fuselage segments for the production of long-haul aircraft in Munich and flew them to the Hamburg Airbus plant in Finkenwerder.

Normally, these flights are operated from Manching airport, which cannot be approached at the moment due to renovation work on the runways. The Beluga ST was developed in the early 1990s on the basis of the Airbus model A300-600.

To carry out the assignment, the aircraft needed to have a cargo volume large enough to load entire, fully assembled fuselage segments and fly them back and forth between the individual Airbus plants. (cj)
