A train that goes down in history
The first freight train in history recently crossed the Marmaray tunnel in Turkey under the Bosporus. The train departed from the Chinese city of Xi'an and is on the way to Prague in Czechia. China Railway Express handled the journey on the Asian part of the route and the Austrian Rail Cargo Group is now responsible for the European part of the connection.
The train with 40 carriages is 820 m long and will complete its 11,500 km long journey along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route in 12 days.
According to the Turkish State Railway, it is estimated that, by 2025, it will carry freight volumes of five million t through the Marmara Canal on this new route between China and Western Europe. (ben)
