A tool to evaluate sustainable fuels

The IAPH clean marine fuels working group has released the first version of a fuel-agnostic bunker operations audit toolkit, designed for ports and competent authorities to evaluate the safety and sustainability of bunker operations.

This new tool, available to IAPH members, supports licence applications for facilities handling various fuels, including methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia.

The package includes an eight-step audit tool, a guidance manual, and an intake form for candidate operators, allowing to enter data both manually and electronically. Developed with input from port authorities and industry stakeholders, it ensures that bunker facility operators adhere to safety standards and effective management practices.

The toolkit is expected to be available for non-members on a subscription basis by the end of the year. Peter Alkema, chair of the clean marine fuels working group, highlighted that the new offering builds on the foundations of the earlier LNG bunker operations audit tool and aims to adapt best practices for a wider range of alternative fuels.
