A tool to assess GHG impact

The Berlin-based software developer Zero 44 has launched its "fuel EU maritime calculator" to help shipping companies assess the financial impact of the upcoming fuel EU maritime regulation. The tool estimates the greenhouse gas intensity of a ship's fuel consumption and the potential penalties for non-compliance.

Fuel EU maritime, which is set to take effect in January 2025, aims to reduce vessels' average greenhouse gas intensity, with targets becoming stricter every five years. The regulation covers emissions over a fuel's entire lifecycle and applies to voyages arriving at or departing from EU ports.

Zero 44's calculator is designed to provide an initial assessment of the regulation's impact, with plans for a more comprehensive software solution in preparation. In a press release, co-founder Friederike Hesse emphasised the tool's role in helping companies understand and prepare for the costs associated with Fuel EU Maritime. (pb)
