A timeline for full scrubber discharge ban
Sweden will introduce a phased ban on discharges from ship scrubbers. Starting on 1 July 2025, the discharge of wash water from open-loop scrubbers will be banned within Swedish territorial waters, aligning with Denmark's similar restrictions.
By 1 January 2029, Sweden will extend the ban to include discharges from all scrubber types, including closed-loop systems. This move reflects a growing global trend towards stricter environmental regulations, encouraging shipowners to adopt alternative pollution control measures like low-sulphur fuels. (pb)
