A tailwind for Ventofoils
The Dutch company Econowind is pushing ahead with the building of its wind propulsion system Ventofoils to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of sea-going vessels. The Investment and Development Agency for the Northern Netherlands (NOM) and Horizon Flevoland have now decided to invest in this innovative technology.
Ventofoils act as vertical aircraft wings, converting wind into forward thrust and reducing fuel consumption by up to 30%, aligning with stricter environmental regulations.
The collaboration with Bijlsma shipyard for larger steel Ventofoils further expands their presence in the market. Automated controls and AI integration promise enhanced wind optimisation and a greener future for shipping, Econowind says. (pb)
