A simple and cost-effective way to cut emissions
Wärtsilä, a provider of innovative technologies and lifecycle solutions for the global marine and energy markets, has conceived a new radical derating retrofit solution.
After a test on a container ship last year, the group has announced that "Wärtsilä Fit4Power" enables ship owners to reduce the bore size of two-stroke engines by 25%. It will save 2,000 t of fuel and reduce 6,000 t of CO2 emissions annually - ensuring them compliance with current carbon intensity indicator (CII) regulations, and futureproofing assets against future environmental measures.
Analysis shows that without modification, over 80% of the global merchant fleet could fall into the lowest CII rating by 2030, requiring mandatory corrective action and risking losing business to more efficient vessels. (lh)
