A partnership to build ammonia-fuelled engines
Wingd, a Swiss marine power company specialising in the decarbonisation of marine transport through sustainable energy systems, and the Japanese shipbuilder and technology developer Mitsubishi Shipbuilding have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
The agreement involves the building of vessels with an ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS). The vessels will be put into service by 2027, and the project will begin in Q3/2023.
Mitsubishi will be provided with X-DF-A engines, specifications for installing the engines and the requirements for all auxiliary fuel systems. The project will give the partners "first-mover advantage in using ammonia in marine engines to meet IMO decarbonisation targets," says Manabu Kawakado, head of the Marine Engineering Centre, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding.
