A new extension in East Midlands?

Proposals have been made to construct a logistics site alongside East Midlands Airport (EMA), potentially boosting the local economy by up to GBP 132 million per year.

Manchester Airports Group, which operates EMA, has submitted a planning application to the Northwest Leicestershire district council. In its proposal, the group outlines 135,000 sqm of storage or distribution space as well as offices. Structured in units, the site will have access to the A453 motorway, the East Midlands Gateway railfreight hub and of course the EMA, positioning this hub within the “golden triangle” of the UK logistics network.

“Given its status as a freeport tax site, we are confident that if approved, we will have little difficulty in attracting businesses, bringing much-needed jobs to the region during its construction and operation,” says EMA’s managing director Steve Griffiths. The project could create more than 2,000 jobs after completion. (mk)
