A jolly crew
Ignazio Messina & C., a Genoese shipping company, has taken over the 'Jolly Giada', a full-container ship, at the Port of Algeciras, completing its first phase of planned acquisitions in the container vessel market.
The 'Jolly Giada', a sister ship of the recently acquired 'Jolly Rosa', measures 260 m in length and 32 m in width. It has a gross tonnage of 42,112 t and can carry 4,387 teu, including space for 360 reefer containers.
Previously chartered by Maersk, it was built by the Korean shipyard Daewoo in 2010. The vessel is under the command of Captain Tommaso Elmetto, leading a multinational crew of 22. With 'Jolly Rosa', 'Jolly Oro 'and 'Jolly Argento', acquired in late 2023, ‘Jolly Giada’ forms a compact and homogeneous fleet.
The new vessel will initially be deployed on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, as well as on East Africa and South Africa routes.
Messina decided to specialize in ConRo transports since the entry of MSC. The conversion of the fleet to full container ships is in full swing. The family-run company has gradually sold a total of eight ConRo freighters in recent months. (pb)
