A great leap for Guadeloupe Port Caraibes
The Grand Port maritime Guadeloupe Port Caraibes reached new milestones in 2021. For the first time in its history, 4.2 million t of goods passed through the port’s facilities. This is 16% more than in the pre-pandemic year of 2019 and 18% more than in 2020. Import traffic was back to a level similar to that of a normal year and exports benefited from particularly strong traffic to Guyana.
All segments showed a positive trend: while liquid bulk increased by 18% compared to 2020, solid bulk remained positive for all the main products (37%). Container traffic was sustained both on the domestic market and on the transhipment market, generating an overall increase of around 31,000 teu compared to 2019.
As in 2020, the implementation of the Brazex 2 service from September to December 2021, which offers an exclusive connection between Northern Brazil and Guadeloupe, boosted transhipment traffic with larger capacity vessels (fresh fruit transport, high season in Brazil, transhipment to Europe). 238,000 teu were handled, an increase of 15% compared to 2019, including 61,000 teu in transhipment (+30%).
