A combination for zero emissions
With the vessel ‘FPS Maas’ the Dutch shipping company FPS is implementing its plan to build a fleet of ten emission-free inland and shortsea vessels.
The conversion project involves the firms Future Proof Shipping (FPS) and the Holland Shipyards Group (HSG). HSG builds and overhauls ships, and FPS, as a zero-emissions shipowner, will offer the sustainable container vessel capacity to the market.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, the unit’s diesel propulsion will be replaced by hydrogen technology, removing both the main engine and transmission and installing a new modular propulsion system. This will ultimately consist of electric motors, hydrogen tanks, a fuel-cell system and an EST Floattech battery system with a capacity of 504 kWh.
Once the ‘FPS Maas’ is back in service, it will transport containers between Rotterdam and Antwerp. (sh)
