A cargo ship with 100% wind power
Vela, a designer and owner of cargo sailboats, has unveiled the design of its new vessel. It is a first-of-its-kind trimaran cargo ship that will allow the French company to transport goods across the Atlantic Ocean using 100% wind power.
The trimaran also enhances stability and ensures the safety of the cargo. The interiors of the ship are made of aluminium and from bio-sourced and geo-sourced materials.
Michael Fernandez-Ferri, cofounder of Vela: "We are very happy to be able to continue facilitating American and French culture exchange, but in a way that prioritises the decarbonisation of Franco-American trade as well."
The first Vela trimaran cargo vessel is expected to make its maiden voyage mid-2025, sailing the transatlantic route between Europe and USA. The production is set to start early 2024, and is expected to transport the equivalent of 51 teu containers. (lh)
