84 million tkm shifted from road to rail

PSA Italy says that its Southern Express rail link between Basel (Switzerland) and Genoa (Italy) can reduce CO2 emissions by 83% and energy consumption by 49% compared to moving the cargo by road.

This statement is based on the findings of a simulation tool developed by the German environmental software company EcoTransIT World (ETW). The tool calculates energy consumption and GHG emissions for trucks, ships, trains, and aircraft.

The Southern Express between the port of Genoa and the Swiss Frenkendorf rail terminal near Basel was launched in 2018. Since then, the direct train has shifted 84 million tkm or 21,000 teus from road to rail.

The rail service runs three days a week. Transit time is ten hours and 94% of trains arrive within two hours of the scheduled arrival time, the Italian terminal operator said. (ben)
