700 t CO2 less
In Austria, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has extended its carriage contract with wood-based materials manufacturer Egger until 2024.
Over the next three years, RCG will transport around 90,000 t of glue and other chemical raw materials for chipboard production to the production sites in Lower Austria and Tyrol. The rail transport will avoid more than 3,500 truck journeys per year and thus save more than 700 t of CO2.
The companies will also be using a new type of rolling stock: the wagons, some of which are more than 30 years old, will be gradually substituted by new, more modern tank wagons.
The first eight test wagons are already in operation, and another seven old wagons are now being replaced. The new equipment will increase workers' safety and productivity during transports, RCG says. (ben)
