5G tests in Duisport
Work on a 5G test field in the port of Duisburg has begun. The objective is to test the semi-automated control of port cranes via mobile phone technology and to increase throughput without requiring additional space.
Over the next two years the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is contributing about EUR 1 million to the project, which was launched with a public kick-off on 3 November in Duisburg's inner port.
Deutsche Telekom is equipping the Logport I area in Rheinhausen with its own 5G campus network for the project. Such a network is an exclusive local mobile network that is tailored to individual technical needs of digitalisation. The plans including linking cameras and sensors in the port area via 5G technology. This will make the handling of goods by road, rail and water more transparent and easier to manage. (sh)
