58,000 quiet freight wagons
Deutsche Bahn plans to equip the entire freight wagon fleet on its German rail network with state-of-the-art composite brake blocks or "whisper brakes" by the end of 2020. The retrofitting programme should be completed by that date, and DB Cargo will then have up to 63,000 quiet wagons. Already today, 58,000 wagons - or 90% of the fleet - are running quietly along the rail tracks.
DB Cargo is investing a total of EUR 200 million from its own budget in upgrading its rolling stock. The whisper brakes prevent corrugation of the wheel thread and thus reduce rolling noise. Noise exposure from a train as its passes by is lessened by about ten decibels, which the human ear perceives as just half of the previous level. (ben)
