24% more freighters at biggest global cargo hub
In April, cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) dropped 14.2% compared to the same month last year, to 338,000 t.
The overall decline in cargo handled was mainly attributed to the 51% decline in transhipments, while exports increased by 4%, with North America being the strongest market. Traffic to/from key trading regions in Southeast Asia and India decreased most significantly in the month.
While the Covid-19 pandemic's severe impact on passenger traffic continued during the month (-99.5%), cargo-only passenger aircraft contributed to the 24.3% increase in freighter movements.
Over the first four months of the year, cargo throughput recorded 1.3 million t (-11.7%), on a 12-month rolling basis, cargo throughput amounted to 4.6 million t (-7.8%). (ah)
