2022 was good to the Ports of Normandy
Hervé Morin, president of the Normandy Regional Council and of Ports of Normandy, looked back with joy on the results of 2022: "In every area of its business, the signals are green, confirming that its investment strategy (EUR 435 million between 2007 and 2022) has paid off."
In 2023, Ports of Normandy wants to go further, with its multi-annual investment plan (PPI) covering all three of its ports. Almost EUR 61 million will be invested.
In 2022, there were +7% more port calls than in 2021 (3,219 calls) and 6.5% more compared to 2019. Tonnage grew by 12.5% to 7,03 million t. Cross-Channel freight posted a 5% increase in tonnage (5.6 million t) in spite of a 4.5% fall in the number of HGVs (almost 210,000 units), including unaccompanied vehicle traffic (down 3% to 69,000 units).
The Irish market, after an exceptional year in 2021 (traffic multiplied by three between Ireland and Cherbourg), fell by 8% in tonnage (2.2 million t) and 12% in units (88,000 HGVs including 46,000 unaccompanied trailers). The Port of Cherbourg is facing increased competition on direct maritime routes. Fishing was up 11% in tonnage. (sh)
