20 years, 21 million franks

Camion Transport expanding its Bern branch. To mark the 20th anniversary of its facility in Burgdorf, Camion Transport is starting operations in its significantly expanded cargo logistics centre there. The firm is proud that this investment will make it fit for a sustainable future.

The eastern Swiss transport and logistics enterprise Camion Transport (CT) went ahead recently with operations in the extension of its branch in the Swiss capital Bern.

The improvement measures, realised thanks to investments amounting to approximately CHF 21 million, are the second wave of improvements the firm has made there since 2009. They began in 2021 and continued through to the finishing touches at the end of November.

René Enzler, CT Burgdorf’s branch manager, said that “the extension isn’t the only reason to celebrate. Our anniversary is worth a party too. Above all, however, both factors show the strength of our path and of our vision for the future. The added space and new equipment will enable us to continue to meet our customers’ needs even better, optimise our logistics processes and at the same time assume our responsibility to look after the environment.”

A challenging construction period

The three years of construction saw a few challenges. The building work took place in the midst of ongoing operations and was completed in three stages. Construction noise; a shortage of handling, storage and manoeuvring space for trucks; dust, and a series of improvised operational solutions represented the biggest problems.

The logistics infrastructure now provides around 4,900 m2 of storage space (+1,500 m2), 4,200 m2 of handling space ( a rise of 1,400 m2), 32 truck bays and an underground car park for cars and emission-free vans. A photovoltaic system with no less than 1,344 panels and a maximum output of 590 kW peak is operational on the roof.

The facility’s heating system has been replaced with a groundwater heat pump and the vehicle fleet, in turn, will be supplemented with electric commercial vehicles, which will be refuelled at 13 charging points from spring 2025 onwards.
