16 new eco-friendly RTGs for Manila
16 new hybrid rubber-tyred gantries (RTG) recently went into service at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), the flagship of Philippines-headquartered International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI). MICT is awaiting the delivery of two super post-panamax quay cranes (QC) and twelve more hybrid RTGs before the end of H1/2019.
Three QCs (including the Philippines’ first pair of neo-panamax cranes) that were delivered in 2018 are already operational.
Manufactured by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) in Japan, the hybrid RTGs are equipped with a 200 kVA Li-ion battery and a smaller diesel engine that improves the terminals’ carbon footprint. Once fully commissioned, the RTGs are expected to increase MICT’s container yard productivity and ensure an environment-friendly supply chain. The plan is to reduce carbon emissions by 40%, improve fuel economy by up to 60% and reduce noise levels at the container yard.
Capacity improvements are also underway at MICT. They include the first phase construction of berths 7 and 8, and back-up areas for the future berths 9 and 10. (kd)
