150 more roads than railtracks
For every new kilometre of railtrack, 150 km of roads are built. Germany’s road network has been expanded by 250,000 km since 1994, which amounts to an average of 192 km per week.
In contrast, an average of only 1.3 km of new railtracks are put into operation over the same period, an analysis conducted by the Network of European Railways (NEE) says. The picture looks particularly bleak for railfreight. Only four of the 58 newly opened train connections in Germany were built exclusively for freight traffic – a total of 1,709 km of railtracks for the entire country.
The NEE is now calling for a significant expansion of rail transport services and a coordinated change in direction to channel investments into rail infrastructure. (ben)
