120 m long trailer combinations cross the desert
DB Schenker shipped almost 200 components, or 90,000 freight tonnes, through the Australian desert. The components will now be used to build the world's largest rail mounted vehicles.
The 106 m long and 40 m high vehicles will be deployed for the South Flank mine project in Pilbara in Western Australia to transport around 20,000 t of iron ore per day.
Schenker carried the gigantic modules from Henderson over 1,700 km on three vessels to Port Hedland, where they were loaded onto specialised hydraulic heavy transport vehicles and then trucked overland to the mine in the Pilbara Region 350 km away.
Among other units, the convoys contained trailer combinations measuring 120 m. On their journey, they passed 27 bridges and five railway crossings. (ben)
