10 million teu capacity for Charleston Harbour
In her third state of the port address, South Carolina Ports president and CEO Barbara Melvin highlighted the port's strategic investments in infrastructure to meet growing demand in the Southeast US market.
With USD 3 billion invested, SC Ports is expanding its capacity to 10 million teu, including the reopening and expansion of Leatherman Terminal, which adds 700,000 teu to Charleston harbour. Plans are also underway to enhance the North Charleston terminal and further develop inland ports.
Melvin emphasised the importance of these projects in maintaining efficient operations and supporting the region’s booming industries, including automotive, retail, and e-commerce. SC Ports continues to focus on rail capabilities, with the Navy Base intermodal facility expected to triple the cargo moved by rail. It plays a vital role in South Carolina's economy, supporting one in nine jobs and generating USD 87 billion in economic impact annually. (pb)
