Cette base est consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme la colonie habit\u00e9e en permanence la plus au nord de la Terre et joue un r\u00f4le important dans le soutien des op\u00e9rations de l&#8217;OTAN ainsi que dans la recherche sur le changement climatique.<\/p>\n<p>CFS Alert se trouve \u00e0 82,5 degr\u00e9s de latitude nord et est presque enti\u00e8rement entour\u00e9e par la couche de glace arctique, qui ne fond que 30 jours par an. Pendant cette p\u00e9riode, la couche de glace est cependant trop peu profonde pour les navires de ravitaillement, ce qui signifie que la livraison de biens essentiels se fait exclusivement par une piste d&#8217;atterrissage semi-pr\u00e9par\u00e9e en gravier et en neige compact\u00e9e, mesurant moins de la moiti\u00e9 de la longueur d&#8217;une piste normale. Pour fournir chaleur et technologie fonctionnelle aux quelques centaines de r\u00e9sidents de la station, la Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) doit d\u00e9ployer deux fois par an des avions de transport C-17 pour livrer pr\u00e8s d&#8217;un million de litres de k\u00e9ros\u00e8ne n\u00e9cessaires au fonctionnement des chauffages et des appareils de communication. Pour la premi\u00e8re fois, la RAF a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 cette mission afin de d\u00e9velopper ses capacit\u00e9s dans l&#8217;Arctique.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Le vol vers l&#8217;High Arctic est un d\u00e9fi, surtout lorsque la m\u00e9t\u00e9o peut changer rapidement. C&#8217;est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment pour cela que cette activit\u00e9 est si importante. La collaboration avec nos coll\u00e8gues canadiens a montr\u00e9 \u00e0 quel point nos forces a\u00e9riennes travaillent en \u00e9troite collaboration. Le C-17 fonctionne tr\u00e8s bien dans ces conditions, et c&#8217;est un privil\u00e8ge de contribuer \u00e0 une mission qui est essentielle au fonctionnement \u00e0 Alert \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le lieutenant de vol Mike Chandler, pilote de la 99e escadrille.<\/p>\n<p>Les \u00e9quipages de la 99e escadrille, op\u00e9rant depuis la base spatiale de Pituffik au Groenland, ont effectu\u00e9 au total huit vols vers Alert, livrant pr\u00e8s de 300 000 litres de k\u00e9ros\u00e8ne aux \u00ab Frozen Chosen \u00bb pour garantir la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des op\u00e9rations de l&#8217;OTAN dans le nord.<\/p>\n<h3>Renforcement de la coop\u00e9ration avec le Canada<\/h3>\n<p>En plus de d\u00e9velopper des capacit\u00e9s pour op\u00e9rer sur des pistes gel\u00e9es, les \u00e9quipages ont \u00e9galement intensifi\u00e9 la coop\u00e9ration avec la RCAF en int\u00e9grant compl\u00e8tement les op\u00e9rations, la logistique et la technique. De plus, ils ont vol\u00e9 avec des \u00e9quipages mixtes sur les avions de l&#8217;autre, ce qui est rare depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab C&#8217;est un puissant signe de la port\u00e9e, de la disponibilit\u00e9 et de la capacit\u00e9 de la RAF. Op\u00e9rer \u00e0 des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres de la Grande-Bretagne, dans des conditions de froid extr\u00eame et avec une infrastructure limit\u00e9e, prouve que nous pouvons g\u00e9n\u00e9rer une mobilit\u00e9 a\u00e9rienne op\u00e9rationnelle partout o\u00f9 elle est n\u00e9cessaire. Notre partenariat avec le Canada est solide ; nous sommes d\u00e9termin\u00e9s \u00e0 travailler avec l&#8217;un de nos plus proches alli\u00e9s pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et la stabilit\u00e9 dans le Grand Nord \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le commodore de l&#8217;air James, commandant de la Air Mobility Force.<\/p>\n<p>Les avions de transport C-17 de la 99e escadrille de la RAF Brize Norton se sont r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9s \u00eatre des b\u00eates de somme de la RAF au cours des 25 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s dans diverses missions, de l&#8217;Afghanistan \u00e0 l&#8217;Irak, ainsi que dans de nombreuses missions humanitaires.
