Wärtsilä & EBDG cut port emissions

Technology group Wärtsilä has entered into a collaboration agreement with naval architecture and marine engineering firm Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) to enhance the clean harbour alternative mobile power (Champ) barge design.

This solution, incorporating Wärtsilä's methanol engine technology, targets emissions reduction from large vessels in ports lacking conventional shore power. Champ is designed to meet specific zero-emission plans and regulations in US ports.

Utilising the Wärtsilä 32 methanol engine, it will reduce emissions and align with decarbonisation requirements. The barge will offer a power range of 6 to 16 MW using green methanol, enabling cold ironing for vessels docked or anchored for extended periods. This collaboration underscores both companies' commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. (pb)
