US short line railroad can now handle heavier freight cars

Georgia Central Railway, a 340 km short line freight railroad operating between Macon and Savannah, USA, has upgraded its entire line to handle 142 t railcar loadings, matching the capacity of connecting national railroads.

The railroad had been limited to 132 t loadings due to the capacity of some of the 55 bridges on the line. In recent years, Georgia Central invested USD 4 million in projects to achieve a 142 t capacity, including the installation of 3,200 bridge stringers and 10,000 crossties.

Georgia Central Railway is a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming. It interchanges with CSX, G&W’s Heart of Georgia Railroad and Norfolk Southern. (ben)
