UP to serve new car plant in Texas
Volkswagen Group of America has chosen the US class I railroad to serve its recently opened car facility in Freeport, Texas (USA). Union Pacific (UP) will help VW distribute imported vehicles to 300 dealerships in the central and western USA.
The port Freeport facility has 53 rail car spots and the capacity to annually process up to 140,000 VW, Audi, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini vehicles. It will mainly import vehicles from Europe and Mexico, where VW and Audi operate large assembly plants.
The USD 114 million facility is located south of Houston along the Gulf Coast. Its strategic position provides easier access to rail for sustainable vehicle shipping logistics. (ben)
