UK supermarket chain renews rail partnership

Direct Rail Services (DRS), a division of Nuclear Transport Solutions, has signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal with supermarket giant Tesco. DRS will therefore continue to supply safe, secure and reliable rail operations as part of the partnership the companies established twelve years ago, DRS said.

The rail operator transports over 12,000 containers loaded with Tesco’s products every month, travelling thousands of kilometres around the UK. DRS recently launched Tesco’s tenth railfreight service, removing thousands of trucks from the roads and saving 6,000 t CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalents) per year.

According to DRS, rail emits 76% less CO2 compared to road haulage and each Tesco train takes around 40 trucks off the roads. (ben)
