UK – new railfreight incentive
Freightliner has introduced a new Tilbury2 to Manchester Trafford Park intermodal railfreight link in the UK. The service, which transports containers arriving from Europe, is particularly significant as it was made possible by the “access charge discount” scheme.
The programme was recently launched by Network Rail to support the creation of new connections and encourage the modal shift to rail. It provides a period of time where charges are waived, to grow volumes and enable the service to become financially sustainable.
The new train runs five days a week – it is the first rail link to use Network Rail’s new scheme, Freightliner said. (ben)
