UK boosts railway in the North

One of Britain's largest rail projects is on track thanks to a GPB 3.9 billion (EUR 4.5 billon) funding for the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Once complete, the full route will offer significantly improved rail capacity, connectivity, and speed between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York. The funding will be invested, for example, in doubling the number of tracks from two to four between Huddersfield and Ravensthorpe, allowing faster trains to overtake slower stopping services and freight journeys. It will also support digital signalling along the route.

According to the department of transport, the Transpennine Route Upgrade represents the first major step in delivering transformed East-West connectivity in the North of the UK. (ben)
