Transporting hydrogen better by rail than by lorry

Hydrogen hauled by rail has less impact on the environment, compared to transporting it by road, and it can also be more easily shipped in larger quantities on the railways, according to the results of a study carried out by the German rail enterprise Deutsche Bahn. Technically and legally-speaking, delivering hydrogen by rail is already possible today. There’s a lack of suitable transport containers in the railway segment, however.

The authors of the study have proposed a pilot project to study the ways in which supplying new hydrogen refilling stations by rail can be made economically interesting. The study analysed in detail the ways in which pressurised hydrogen can be transported by rail by carrying out test runs on two routes in Germany’s Rhein-Main region. (ben)
