Ticino’s terminals raise container throughput
In a recent report, Switzerland’s federal office for spatial development (ARE) said that the new railway infrastructure on the Gotthard axis has resulted in a noticeable shift of freight from road to rail.
In addition to transit traffic, the volume of goods transported regionally by rail between Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland has also increased significantly. The volume of containers handled in Ticino terminals has grown by around 38% since 2016.
The infrastructure upgrades included the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016 and of the 4 m freight corridor in 2020. The Ceneri Base Tunnel and the new railway station in Altdorf in the canton of Uri came on stream in 2021. (ben)
