The sulphur switch strategy
In its latest analysis, Sea-Intelligence reports that since the implementation of the IMO2020 regulations, which mandate the use of low-sulphur fuel or approved alternatives like exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), shipping lines have saved a cumulative USD 13 billion by opting for cheaper regular fuel combined with scrubbers.
This trend suggests that while the industry is responsive to regulatory cost pressures, it may seek cost-effective compliance methods that adhere to the letter but not the spirit of environmental regulations. The impact of forthcoming regulations, such as the EU's carbon taxation on shipping, on industry practices remains to be seen. (pb)
